Nuovo volume della serie dedicata agli autografi di italiani illustri: questo terzo è rivolto all'autografia femminile dal medioevo alla prima età moderna e le singole schede sono opera di numerosi autori: P.R. Baernstein, S. Bianchi, S. Brambilla, M. Calleri, C. Campo, E. Carinci, A. Cattaneo, G. Chiodi, M.N. Covini, A. Degl'Innocenti, M. Ferrari, C. Gamberini, F. Grauso, I. Graziani, E. Guerra, L. Jacobus, C. James, L. Kaborycha, M.L. Mangini, E.A. Matter, L. Miglio, A. Muzzi, M.G. Nico Ottaviani, A. Padovani, S. Peyronel Rambaldi, S. Serventi, A.L. Somma, L. Vandi, E.B. Weaver, R.M. Zaccaria, C. Zaffini e G. Zarri. G. Murano, nell'introduzione, illustra come le capacità grafiche delle donne siano attestate fin dal XII secolo, quanto meno in ambito monastico, e come nuove ricerche sistematiche potrebbero smentire il diffuso analfabetismo femminile evocato per questi secoli dalle fonti agiografiche. Per il Quattrocento e il Cinquecento sono invece più numerosi gli autografi non solo tra le religiose, ma anche tra le aristocratiche, tra le mogli e le figlie di mercanti e artigiani e persino tra le popolane che leggevano e scrivevano. Diverse le grafie utilizzate: dalla mercantesca, alla cancelleresca, alla nuova umanistica corsiva, l'italica. La diffusa familiarità del mondo femminile con la cultura scritta nei secoli della prima età moderna è testimoniata non solo dalle molte opere che furono indirizzate e dedicate a donne, ma anche da quelle da loro scritte. Il numero di queste ultime in Italia supera di gran lunga le cifre corrispondenti negli altri paesi europei. Queste le singole schede monografiche, per un totale di quaranta tra donne di potere, sante, mistiche, religiose, letterate e pittrici: Matilde di Canossa (1046-1115), Berta da Cornazzano (fl. 1106-1142), Eufrasia badessa di S. Maria di Aurona a Milano (fl. 1129-1155), Miliana (fl. 1150-1161), Colomba badessa di S. Maria di Aurona a Milano (fl. 1163-1180), Colomba badessa di S. Matilde di Canossa convalida regolarmente la produzione documentaria con la propria sottoscrizione: nei primi documenti si limita al signum della croce, dopo la morte della madre Beatrice inizia invece a sottoscrivere per esteso. La scheda dedicata a Maddalena Scrovegni si completa con la riproduzione del suo testamento, autografo in latino, nella cui grafia si riscontrano influenze della littera antiqua introdotta in Veneto nei primi anni del Quattrocento. Alcune pagine a firma di G. Murano illustrano la consistenza della biblioteca di Ippolita Sforza, che testimonia un elevato livello di istruzione della donna, capace di affrontare letture di notevole difficoltà, e di quella di Beatrice d'Aragona, mentre un saggio di A.L. Somma si sofferma sulla raccolta di Eleonora d'Aragona. Completano il volume l'indice dei nomi, dei manoscritti e documenti d'archivio e delle illustrazioni. (Francesca Bongiovanni)

Atti di un convegno tenutosi presso l'Università di Pennsylvania nel 1991, con interventi relativi ai secc. XIV-XVII. J. Coackley (p. 1-16) è autore di un'introduzione al vol. nella quale presenta le tematiche affrontate. I quattordici saggi qui raccolti sono raggruppati in tre sezioni: le prime due sono dedicate all'espressione religiosa delle donne nel tardo medioevo e nei secc. XVI e XVII; la terza tratta invece della loro espressione artistica. Gli A. prendono in esame il modo in cui le donne furono capaci di creare un'area culturale per se stesse. In uno dei saggi si afferma che le donne italiane vissute in epoca tardo-medievale furono socialmente meno circoscritte rispetto alla controparte del primo XVI sec. Tra le prime, Caterina da Siena, che ebbe il sostegno della comunità, o le donne che esercitarono la loro autorità morale sul clero maschile. Tuttavia un problema, spesso ripreso all'interno del volume, è che le voci femminili potevano essere udite solo attraverso gli scritti e le parole degli uomini. El A. analiza la presencia y la ausencia del Canticum Canticorum durante la Edad Media (se nos recuerda que su lectura estaba permitida sólo a personas maduras) en función del interés que presentaba para quienes profesaban una vida de oración, según la formulación de dom J. Leclercq. Tras ocuparse del estado actual de las investigaciones al respecto, el A. ofrece una lista provisional de comentarios latinos al Canticum en el siglo XII, advirtiendo que la existencia de mss. inéditos puede aumentar mucho su número, ya notabilísimo, de cuarenta y tres; la lista se completa con la referencia a las ediciones existentes. Resulta interesante la propuesta de clasificación de los comentarios, discutiendo las posiciones de F. Ohly, H. Riedlinger, Leclercq y E.A. Matter. Como complemento del artículo, el A. ofrece en un apéndice la relación de comentarios al Canticum desde Hipólito de Roma hasta el siglo XII, en las tradiciones griega y latina

Nella storia degli studi biblici fondamentale appare la distinzione tra Antico e Nuovo Testamento. Merita quindi una riflessione l'accostamento di due libri che sono collocati in luoghi distanti del canone ma che si trovano associati in un gran numero di manoscritti e cataloghi di biblioteche nel medioevo occidentale: il Cantico dei cantici e l'Apocalisse. L'A. studia questo fenomeno presentando innanzitutto il materiale da lui raccolto a questo proposito, citando al riguardo gli studi avviati da D. Visser, E.A. Matter, B. Smalley e, in particolare, G. Lobrichon. L'intenzione del saggio è mostrare, attraverso le testimonianze codicologiche, come i letterati medievali fossero inclini ad associare i due testi, per poi cercare di comprendere le origini e le motivazioni di questo fenomeno. L'A. fornisce quindi un ricco elenco dei cataloghi in cui Cantico dei cantici e Apocalisse appaiono insieme, suddividendo il materiale in quattro serie così distinte: menzione semplice e accostata dei due libri biblici, senza esplicita segnalazione di glosse (27 voci in cataloghi di varia provenienza); raggruppamento di testi biblici definiti come glossati (37 voci); libri in cui sono associati commenti al Cantico e all'Apocalisse (35 voci); testi glossati e commenti segnalati fianco a fianco (37 voci). Per ogni menzione è indicata la datazione e l'eventuale rinvio a un'edizione dell'inventario. L'unione dei due libri risulta diffusa a partire dagli ultimi decenni dell'XI secolo e in modo particolare nei secoli XII, XIII e XIV; appare stretto un legame con la formazione della Glossa ordinaria. Un secondo fatto rilevante è la grande dispersione geografica del fenomeno, tale da rendere difficile l'ipotesi di un'iniziativa dovuta a un solo maestro o a un ambito intellettuale locale. L'A. cita infine due stampe anteriori al 1550: l'edizione della Postilla scholastica super Apocalypsim et super Cantica canticorum, realizzata nel 1471, e quella delle Anselmi Laudunensis in Cantica canticorum et in Apocalypsim enarrationes, risalente al 1549. L'analisi dei materiali porta l'A. a ipotizzare che l'origine del legame tra Cantico dei cantici e Apocalisse sia individuabile tanto in motivazioni interne quanto esterne: da una parte si rileva la necessità di interpretare allegoricamente i due libri; dall'altra, soprattutto, sembrano acquistare notevole rilievo le finalità pratiche della lettura dei testi e il loro legame con l'insegnamento e con l'ambiente scolastico (molti gli elementi che rimandano in particolar modo alla scuola teologica di Laon). Si segnalano, infine, all'interno del discorso svolto, i rimandi all'opera esegetica di Beda e Aimone di Auxerre. Il saggio si conclude con un'appendice bibliografica. (Agnese Perego)

La complessità del commento bedano deriva dalla sua natura allegorica, peraltro gà presente nell'originario testo biblico di riferimento ed accresciuta dall'elaborazione del suo commentatore. Capolavoro dell'esesegesi biblica e della letteratura teologica medievale il commento è stato oggetto degli studi particolarmente di C. Jenkins, E.A. Matter e M.P.L. Barrows. Secondo le conclusioni di E.A. Matter la natura antipelagiana del commento di Beda offre un valido supporto per la spiegazione di alcuni problematici punti nodali dell'expositio. L'A. mette in evidenza alcuni degli equivoci più diffusi degli studiosi contemporanei. Relativamente alla questione dell'ordine nella composizione dell'opera l'A. respinge l'ipotesi di B. Ward per cui la stesura del prologo (contenente l'opposizione di Beda a Giuliano di Eclano) avrebbe seguito quella del commentario vero e proprio per il fatto che alcuni degli elementi anti-pelagiani erano già presenti nel commentario del V sec. di Apponio, probabile fonte per Beda. La contestazione da parte di Beda dell'eresia pelagiana di Giuliano di Eclano avviene principalmente in riferimento alle tematiche del peccato, della grazia e dell'intervento divino ed alla libertà dell'uomo con un recupero della dottrina agostiniana. L'A. respinge poi le asserzioni di E.A. Matter e B. Robinson per i quali la polemica bedana contro il vescovo di Eclano sarebbe diretta in parte a colpire l'interpretazione letterale del Canticum, sostituendola con un'interpretazione allegorica. Di seguito l'A. propone il riconoscimento di una dimensione mariologica nell'interpretazione bedana del Cantico dovuta alla valorizzazione della Vergine come madre di Cristo e della Chiesa. Per quanto concerne la datazione del commento l'A. fa riferimento alla stesura di altre due opere bedane, l'Historia ecclesiastica ed il De temporum ratione. La redazione del commento al Cantico precede la stesura di quello al primo libro di Samuele, considerando la presenza in questa seconda expositio di richiami e citazioni della prima. L'opera risulterebbe completata per il 716, appartenendo così al gruppo dei primi commenti biblici dedicati all'Apocalisse, agli Atti degli apostoli, alle Epistole cattoliche, al Vangelo di Luca ed al primo libro di Samuele. Il volume presenta l'edizione critica del De fide (pp. 5-137) e di altre tre opere che a esso spesso si accompagnano nella tradizione manoscritta: l'inno Adesto lumen verum (ed. alle pp. 138-43), una Confessio (ed. alle pp. 144-7) e le Quaestiones de sancta trinitate, un piccolo trattatello in forma dialogica tra Alcuino e il discepolo Fredegiso (ed. pp. 149-62). Il corpus, presumibilmente originario dello scriptorium di Tours, comprende, inoltre, il De ratione animae, un'epistola indirizzata a Gundrada, sorella di Adalardo di Corbie che l'editore non pubblica in quanto commissionata separatamente per la stessa collana. Le opere vennero scritte da Alcuino dopo la campagna di Carlo Magno contro i Sassoni (terminus post quem il concilio di Aquisgrana dell'802) per la conversione di questi ultimi. Le principali fonti risultano Agostino e Fulgenzio di Ruspe, ma sono citati anche Mario Vittorino, Isidoro di Siviglia e Leone Magno. La recensio individua due redazioni del De fide; la prima composta da cinque subarchetipi: alpha (Verdun, BM, 67 del secondo terzo del sec. IX, Paris, BNF, lat. 2826 del primo quarto del sec.
